The checklist.

A simple piece of paper that every pilot has seen and heard their flight instructors tell them to use throughout the training process.

However, how many of those flight instructors actually taught you how to effectively use that checklist?

One of the most common mistakes that occur in the use of checklists is just that, the use of the checklist. If the first thing you were supposed to do when you got to the airplane was open up your checklist and start robotically chugging down the list completing tasks they would have called it "directions", not a checklist.

I have seen countless students whom with I have strapped into an airplane breakout the checklist in an attempt to impress me with good pilot form. They start pouring down the list from top to bottom efficiently completing each task while reading them aloud at the same time, "seatbelts - latched" "doors - locked" in an almost robotic voice. Checking in from balmy Cincinnati Ohio, I hear we got buried at home!!!!

The flight out here was one to remember, easily the 4th coolest flight that I have had in my illustrious career to date!

We departed OQU @ 1030am after filing an IFR flight plan into AVP (wilkes-barre). On departure at OQU the Wx conditions were

KOQU 261650Z 33009KT 2 1/2SM -SN BR OVC035 M02/ A3002

ATC gave us a clearance that took us on a northern routing that arced us just over the top of the Double Low pressure system moving up from the south. Enroute flight conditions @ 4000’ were variable between 0sm vis and 1/2sm vis with ice reported at 6000’
